Startup Colorado Logo.png

Startup Colorado

Startup Colorado was founded in 2011 by Phil Weiser and Brad Feld at the Silicon Flatirons Center at the University of Colorado Law School. The initiative initially focused on supporting startups on the Front Range, and the effort to support entrepreneurship across the entire state is the latest evolution of Startup Colorado. Since 2017, Startup Colorado shifted its mission to focus solely on the foundation and success of the State’s rural-based entrepreneurs. Colorado’s rural entrepreneurs are building some of the most exciting business opportunities across the state, from geographically isolated small towns to growing rural hubs. Whether they live inside populations of 60 or 60,000, they are dedicated to diversifying economies, creating new jobs, and fostering local talent. Their goals are mighty and their challenges many. While some business resources are scarce, others are disconnected or hard to find, making it difficult for any entrepreneur to navigate. Startup Colorado solves for this challenge with tactics that drive greater awareness and cohesion on the playing field for entrepreneurs and the business support organizations who serve them. Through strategic networking, partnership development, and collaboration, we eliminate barriers, mitigate support gaps, and dismantle silos.

Colorado Startups

COLORADO HAS ONE OF THE LARGEST STARTUP COMMUNITIES IN THE WORLD The purpose of Colorado Startups is to provide a starting place and a growing place for entrepreneurs building the next generation of BIG companies here in Colorado. This community is comprised of three social groups (Facebook, LinkedIn, and Slack) to help entrepreneurs, from first-time founders to seasoned executives. SOCIAL GROUPS The heart of Colorado Startups is connecting entrepreneurs to one another as well as the greater startup ecosystem. The three social groups are open for any entrepreneur to join and are the best way to network within Colorado’s startup community. COMMUNITY As additional resources, entrepreneurs can utilize the community content. Entrepreneurs can find top talent through Talent Connect. Gain resources through the open-sourced “Ecosystem Canvas.” View the fastest growing companies in the state through “The Leaderboard.” CAPITAL To maximize growth, startups utilize various sources of financing to grow faster. As capital is the most significant need for startups growing in the state, the community has created outstanding programs to assist companies looking to scale. EVENTS Making lasting connections that will help power you as an entrepreneur to grow your business is imperative. Colorado Startups created the Event Connect program to allow event and meetup organizers to bring entrepreneurs together. Also, each year, there is a giant celebration for the startup community, “Party on a Tuesday,” which is the premier event for the community.

Entrepreneurship is a powerful tool to build both individual and community prosperity. But personal, professional, systemic, political, and economic barriers prevent many from accessing the benefits of ownership. Many aspiring entrepreneurs from our community experience financial instability, difficulty accessing safety net programs, exclusion from financial systems, vulnerability to predatory business services, and a lack of access to tailored and relevant support. These barriers undermine individual and communal belief in accessible pathways to ownership. For example, marginalized communities may have a lack of trust in business support systems and financial institutions and, as a result, may not see entrepreneurship as a viable option. Ultimately, this results in an inequitable opportunity for economic inclusion and community autonomy as well as a poorly diversified economy.

Mi Casa Logo.png

MiCasa Resource Center

In 1976, seven mothers and a father living in West Denver founded what would become Mi Casa Resource Center®. They did not have a name for it just then, but they had a clear vision of its purpose as a place for women who wanted more for themselves and their families. They sought a safe and supportive environment where women could complete their education and acquire new employment skills while their children received help and encouragement in school. At its inception in the late 1970s, Mi Casa began offering job-training programs for women to help them break into higher-paying jobs traditionally filled by men. Recognizing self-employment as another viable route to economic stability, Mi Casa expanded in the mid-1980s to include bilingual business development services to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of low-income, female, and minority business owners. In the late-1990s, Mi Casa responded to the need for enrichment programs during out-of-school time by offering a school-based neighborhood center and other academic and enrichment programs for middle and high school youth. As Mi Casa grew and developed, we recognized the need for programs to advance economic self-sufficiency for the entire family. In 2016, our mission evolved to reflect an expanded target population: advance the economic success of families with limited opportunities, as an organization grounded in our Latino heritage. In July 2017, Mi Casa moved its headquarters to Denver’s Westwood neighborhood. In recognition of a lead gift to our capital campaign from the Salazar Family Foundation, Mi Casa’s headquarters were named “Salazar Center for Family Prosperity.” The move to Southwest Denver, along with the state-of-the-art technology and training rooms at the Salazar Center for Family Prosperity, allows us to better serve the community and more efficiently work toward our mission of educating, supporting, and training youth and adults on their path to economic success.

Girl's Inc of Metro Denver

The mission of Girls Inc. of Metro Denver (GIMD) is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold. The vision of GIMD is a world in which every girl values her whole self, discovers her inner strengths, and achieves her goals. Girls Inc. Metro Denver’s comprehensive approach to whole-girl development reflects the following: Girls today face real and profound challenges to their well-being and success, including sexual harassment and violence, inequitable access to education, teen pregnancy, and limiting stereotypes and messages. Girls living in poverty are at increased risk of chronic health and psychological disorders, higher rates of violence and crime, lower rates of high school completion, and limited access to economic and social capital necessary to thrive. Girls-only spaces are designed with the unique needs of girls in mind, provide girls physical and emotional safety, increase girls’ self-esteem and positive decision making, create social support networks, and allow girls to discover their strengths and their voices. Girls Inc. of Metro Denver is proud to announce our three year strategic plan. Our Bold Goal is to be the leader in delivering high-impact programs to girls and advocating for girls’ rights in Colorado. As GIMD invests in organizational and programmatic growth, the organization will continue to partner with girls to remove barriers that limit their innate power and advance gender equity in the world around them.
